I’m a gay man originally from Nebraska.
I left.
At the time, I didn’t see a future in my home state. Religion ruled my life, gay marriage was denounced by almost all the politicians, and I didn’t feel safe.
A lot of hard work has been done since then, and it fills me with joy to see so many pride flags flying now. Yet, the passing of LB574 still came as a gut punch. In high school, I certainly struggled with who I was. I couldn’t be myself. After that bill passed, I couldn’t fathom how much worse it is for trans youth today.
When a government that doesn’t understand you tries to legislate your life, it’s easy to lose hope. Fleeing to somewhere safer seems like the only option, and that is the path I took. Even though I loved my home state, it didn’t love me back. That ends now.
Nebraska should be a safe place for anyone. All of us should be out and proud, no matter who we are. Our motto is “Equality Before the Law,” and my greatest hope is to see it realized. Remember, Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue’s masterpiece stands on your side, and a better Nebraska is possible. We just have to try.
