I figured this may come up, so I’ll let you know my reasoning for using a straight woman to tell this story.
Marsha’s assumptions are challenged by the LGBTQ+ characters in the story. She needs to understand her own prejudices, not be told them. This emotional appeal hits harder, because the pain experienced by the LGBTQ+ characters is filtered through her own guilt.
Don’t worry, boys still kiss boys.
By using a straight woman’s perspective, I’m able to explore some of these deeper emotions that so often aren’t experienced outside our own community.
